In my poorly planned professional life, I never set a goal to be a top-notch planner of events. I don't think anyone would describe me as extroverted, organized, or fun-oriented enough to be the tag person on such things.
Nevertheless, throughout my career event planning opportunities have fallen into my lap, basically the same way the cat distribution system has blessed me: someone merely asked and I said yes.
To be clear, I have more events under my belt than cats. The analogy still works though.
Eventually I might write something about my thoughts on public school/ library/ whatever event planning, but right now I'm going to focus on what's pressing in my life and that is the Dia de los Muertas Storytelling Event, which is scheduled for the week of October 30th.
As I got my head around what I wanted to do last summer, it quickly became apparent that the only way I could articulate this would be through the parent letter:
That's what we're doing. Here are some other details:
Because I felt like this was something interesting enough to share on social media, I wanted to make it pretty. So, I'm partnering with the art classes and they are going to make tissue paper flowers for a floral backdrop.
And now we've crossed over from "simple" and into "time to buy stuff", a place most educators spend at least a little while inhabiting. Because I'd like to fight against my tendency toward spending my paycheck on stuff for work, I created an Amazon list for this one.
Shoutout to my people! A week after the initial share, almost everything has been purchased.
So art is handling decorations over the next couple of weeks. Spanish/ Spanish immersion classes are handling "an intro to Dia de los Muertas". This week, I am figuring out exactly how I will teach the art of storytelling to kiddoes of a variety of ages, so we can do that next week, so they will be ready the following week.
Stay tuned! Next Wednesday, I'll talk more about teaching storytelling.
